Member Spotlight: Kristen & Tony Laidig – Nerdvana Outpost

Kristen Laidig had a lifelong dream of starting a toy store. A couple weeks after her store (Nerdvana Outpost) started turning a profit, COVID-19 struck, greatly impacting her brick-and-mortar business. In the documentary below, she shares how the pandemic has impacted her life and business and how she scrambled to take everything online. The documentary that she and her husband Tony made, talks about what she’s done to adapt, and how the pandemic is affecting people’s lives and businesses.

My husband Dave and I have felt such a sense of urgency to assist small businesses in any way we can. When we saw the Laidig’s documentary, we were so touched by it. It articulates incredibly well WHY we started Free Market Americans. Kristen and Tony put a face to what is happening in our nation! Please share this with everyone you can.

“My husband and I put together this documentary to share our story and encourage others going through similar issues that they’re not alone. Our retail store is for nerds and geeks and features a vintage arcade in the back game room which, of course, is out of commission. We also carry a huge range of games, collectibles and pop culture stuff. We have gifts only for the 18+ crowd as well… so if you like that sort of thing… 😉

Our demographic is ages 8-10 and up and our sweet spot is 20-somethings that haven’t quite had life crack them upside the head yet. In other words, collectors that don’t mind disposing of a little income because they really want “the thing” and families/young adults looking to widen their assortment of games. Glad to be here & meet more like-minded people!”

Crazy Aaron's thinking putty

An example of something Nerdvana Outpost sells is Crazy Aaron’s Puttyworld Putty. It’s perfect for parents of homeschoolers & those now homeschooling who didn’t before and need something to occupy their kids’ hands and also engage the brain’s creative center. This is based on proven science Kristen says she “nerds out about.” Their store is the only one in Pennsylvania they know of that carries 90% of this product line, other than the manufacturers themselves. (100% USA made by people with special needs right outside of Philly!)
